Proxy Wars are guerilla wars carried out by militias that are secretly sponsored by a nation state. Nations can use proxy armies for many different political objectives, and it allows the state sponsor to achieve a political objective without being known. The guerilla armies are like puppets and the nation states are pulling the strings. Iran has been a state sponsor of proxy wars for many years, so has Saudi Arabia. Many other nations have participated in proxy war. The United States itself has sponsored many proxy armies. However, it was attacks on US bases and consulates in Iraq, by proxy armies sponsored by Iran, which led to the assassination of the Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani.
